Supporting Young Carers

At Uffington Church of England Primary School, we recognise the vital role young carers play within their families and our community. We are committed to supporting our young carers to ensure their wellbeing, educational success, and personal development.

What is a Young Carer?

A young carer is someone under 18 who helps care for a family member who has:

  • A physical or mental illness

  • A disability

  • A problem with alcohol or drugs

  • Other health-related needs

Young carers might help with tasks like cooking, cleaning, shopping, giving medicine, or offering emotional support.

Partnership with Be Free Young Carers

We are proud to work closely with Be Free Young Carers, a charity dedicated to supporting young carers in our local area. Through this partnership, we provide tailored support and access to resources that help young carers balance their caring responsibilities with school life.

Young Carers Register

To ensure we identify and support all young carers in our school community, we maintain a Young Carers Register. This confidential register helps us monitor the wellbeing and progress of young carers and ensures they receive the appropriate support.

If you believe your child is a young carer or if your child would like to register, please contact us or speak directly with our Young Carers Lead.

Young Carers Lead

Our designated Young Carers Lead is Mrs Helen Reade (HLTA). Helen is available to provide support, guidance, and a listening ear for young carers. She works closely with Be Free Young Carers and other professionals to ensure our young carers have the help they need to thrive.

You can contact Mrs Reade via the school office.

Support and Resources

  • Emotional and practical support within school.
